“Gibraltar Under Pressure to Impose New Regulations on Gambling Operators”
A new bill has recently been introduced in Gibraltar
requiring online gambling operators to be in possession
of a remote gambling license.
In order to meet the necessary
criteria for obtaining a license, a gambling operator
must prove that the highest standards of software testing
are employed, along with a strict age verification process.
After being awarded a license, a gambling operator would
be bound to disclose any information Gibraltar’s
legal authorities deem necessary or relevant.
Cassava Enterprises and PartyGaming
are just two of the online gambling empires currently
at home in Gibraltar. Both companies benefit from the
country’s low tax
regulations which were originally designed to entice online
gambling operators to set up shop there. Traditionally
internet gambling operators have had little trouble using
Gibraltar for business purposes. However due to the United
Kingdom’s decision to legalize online gambling, Gibraltar
is under pressure to impose stricter regulations
in order to conform to international standards.
In addition to the bill proposing
stricter licensing, the adherence to international gambling
standards is also under scrutiny, with Gibraltar’s lawmakers keen to
follow the United Kingdom’s example. One major reason
for Gibraltar to adopt new legislation is its
agreement with the United Kingdom for advertising its casinos.
Gibraltar is currently the only country outside the European
Union to be able to advertise its casinos legally in the
United Kingdom.
