US legislation cited for retrenchments, which could include Antigua and Gibraltar
It was reported today by Globes, the Israeli business publication, that the software developer 888.com's subsidiary Random Logic, would be letting go 29 employees. This represents seven percent of the staff. The subsidiary is located in Israel and based there in its own research and development center.
The layoffs have resulted from the passage of anti-online gambling restrictions in the United States, affecting the company's activities in that country.
Random - Logic is located in Tel Aviv, and is register as an Israeli company. At the present time it has 435 employees. Globes also reports that the gambling online operation 888 Holdings also projects layoffs among its 150 person workforce in Antigua. Most of these employees work in the company’s call center or are technical support personnel. It appears that those employees who are being forced to leave the company are the ones who were working directly with the United States market.
According to Globes, personnel employed by the company's headquarters in Gibraltar are also to be affected. Globes reports that the company is in the process of reducing staff there as well. The laws in Gibraltar however, require a 60 – day advance notice for dismissal of employees. For this reason, the company has yet to decide the exact number of employees that will be laid off. At the present time, 888 holding has a total of 350 employees working in its Gibraltar operation.
888 Holding company spokesperson, told Globes that because of the changes of the law in United States leading to the cessation of his company's activities in United States, and in view of current overhead expenses, 888 Holding has been forced into some general structural modifications as well as workforce changes. Some of those who are in the company’s workforce and who were involved with the United States market however, have been combined into other international departments.
