Hundreds of brands are licensed in Kahnawake, but here's some First Nation competition
Although it may be possible that politicians in Ontario are attempting to approve laws that would ban advertising of online gambling sites, in their province, in other parts of Canada the attitude regard the online gaming industry is quite different and more welcoming.
In Quebec province, the Kahnawake First Nation Mohawks are the home of in excess of 300 online gaming brands. They also host many other company servers and may well soon experience competition from another Indian organization, the Alexander First Nation.
An Alexander First Nation spokesperson announced this week the establishment of an online gambling commission. She said that Alexander First Nation intends to regulate companies which will be granted licenses which will allow them to operate under the sovereignty of the tribe.
Online gaming licenses will be offered through the new commission, according to a company spokesperson. These will be offer to those applicants deemed to be suitably qualified. It is believed by the commission that such a use of regulations will bring about and make safe a high quality environs in which Internet players may participate with ease and with a lack of concern for their safety.
The projected function of the Alexander Gaming Commission is to control and to regulate gambling and other gaming related activities from within and for the Alexander First Nation. In order to obtain a license for operating, all interactive type games including online casinos and online poker sites, will be reward to complete and to carry out the following three fundamental principles:
* Only those individuals considered as being appropriate or entities, will be allowed to operate within the Alexander First Nation. * All games must be deemed as being fair to all players. * Winners must receive their winnings in a timely fashion.
Within the Alberta province of Canada there are 44 similar sovereign communities, the Alexander First Nation being one of them. The Canadian government settled a claim with the nation in 2002 that reached back to 1905, by awarding the tribe $63 million. This was in settlement of a claim involving approximately 3 851.9 hectares (9,518 acres) of reserve lands. It was claimed that this land had belonged to the Alexander First Nation and had been taken by the Canadian government.
The compensation in the sum of $63 million was in settlement for the losses and damages resulting from the surrender. The large amount involved in the settlement is reflective of the fact that reserve lands included productive agricultural lands as well as being a part of a gas unit which produced natural gas from 1955 through 1997. In order to make sure that future generations of Alexander First Nation benefit from the settlement, most of it was placed in a trust.
