Florida Government Appoints Pro Online Gambling Politician To Senate Position Vacated By Senator Martinez
One of the top destinations in the world for vacations is the state of Florida. Known throughout the world as 'The Sunshine State' it ranks high among States in the USA for vacationing because of the presence of both Disney World and the Space Center not to mention some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. In recent years the state has been working to expand its gambling operations although not with much success. The goal is to replace lost tax revenues that have resulted recently from the effects of the economic downturn.
State governor Charlie Crist has recently appointed George LeMieux to the position vacated by past Senator Mel Martinez. This is considered as being positive news for those who are in favor of the promotion of online gambling in the country, in general.
LeMieux has been involved with Governor Crist in the creation of a gambling compact with Florida’s Seminole Indians. LeMieux became involved in the process in 2007, when Crist initially agreed to a deal with the Seminoles. At that time the proposition was nullified by state’s Supreme Court, wear by lawyers at the time agreed to a plan that would have the fact of reinstating talks with the tribe. Since that time, LeMieux has been a leading negotiator with the Seminoles in hopes of completing the compact.
As LeMieux is appointed to the Senate he will then have the opportunity to take his pro online gambling views to the house of Congress. He will be only one of the very many congressman who support the overturn of the current US prohibition on online gambling. There is legislation that has been introduced by current Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey in addition to that of Barney Frank which propose that online poker and online gambling be permitted but also be regulated within the United States. Propositions such as these are racing much support from the various sectors of the country including approximately a million or so online poker players. They have been delayed due to more pressing issues on the agenda of the US Senate.
LeMieux's known position of being pro-gambling and his experience in this area, can only help promote the legislation being put forth by Frank and Menendez. It will surely be his main position to voice the obvious need for the revenues that can be generated through the regulation of online gambling in the States. It is hopeful that in the long run this action by Governor Crist will benefit the people of Florida.
