World Series of Poker Reaches the Final Round
World Series of Poker’s main event sees the demise of some big name contenders as progress is made to reduce the number of competitors over the weekend.
Saturday night saw only 135 contenders remaining. Sunday night brought that number down to 45. Some of the biggest players were no longer in the running, like last year’s champ Joseph Hachem. Included in the group were Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu and Josh Arieh.
They all won prizes and the vast size of this year’s pool of prizes can be determined by the size of the wins for those that were beaten out on Sunday. For example, Sean Johnson won $164,932 before leaving.
The competition continues Monday at noon, Vegas time, and once that round is completed the field will be reduced to only 27 players after having started out with 8,773.
At this point the lead goes to Jamie Gold who is holding chips valued at $7,330,000 and in second place is Eric Friberg with an impressive $5,905,000 in chips.
From now on all those who are still in the running will finish with impressive checks even as they all strive to reach the finish and the grand jackpot of $12 million, or at least the final table where everyone one is projected to come out a millionaire.
