Young Poker Player Spends His Time Profitably in Barcelona

The 21 year-old Canadian poker player Jack Hinchey may have had a long trip getting to Barcelona in Spain in order to compete in the 888.com World Poker Crown final table, but it was certainly worth it for him. He took home the title and a million dollar main prize.

As the culmination of an inventive tournament featuring both online and offline action, this week's tournament's epic final table was webcast at Pacific Poker. The first stage of the tournament was carried out online at Pacific Poker, where players continued battling until only ten survivors remained.

At that point play was suspended, and the remaining players, which included Hunchey as well as three other Canadians, transferred their chip counts over to a final table in Barcelona. It was at this point that a live face-to-face game took place. When the count got down to eight remaining players, the final action was webcasted over the Internet.

Among the final eight were players from both Europe and Canada including the chip leader, Canadian Jack Hinchey, and also Canadians Michael Lawson and Mark Castonguy. Arjan van Bavel, Bert van Doesburg and Bart Wetsteijn were there from the Netherlands, Piotr Stanislaw from Poland, and Mark Roessler from Germany.

Once the final play began, only eight hours were left before it was all over. Hinchey came out on top with a $1 million payday after a heads-up. Second placed fellow Canadian Michael Lawson, collected a $397,000 from the cashier. Referring to his pump business back home in Canada, Hinchey cracked that winning the million was a better than being in a sewage pit.

The third placed winner, Piotr Stanislaw went home with a check for $210,000, and fourth placed winner Hollander Arjan van Bavel, won $180,000. Also winning substantial six-figure prizes were Bart Wetsteijn with $120,000, and Van Doesburg, Roessler and Castonguy who collected checks of $90,000, $60,000 and $30,000 respectively.
