Minister Sees Resolution Of WTO Disputes As Coming Soon
The ongoing and long-term despite between the United States and the government of Antigua and Barbuda may be coming to a resolution as reflected in meetings last Friday between the U.S. Trade Representative to the World Trade Organization and a delegation from Antigua and Barbuda.
It was recently reported by the Antigua Sun that Antigua and Barbuda Finance Minister Dr. Errol Cort, the head of the islander mission, showed optimism regarding a settlement after the meetings with US officials.
Speaking to the Antigua Sun, Minister Cort said that the delegation was able to further discuss components for the possibility of a settlement and that they had reached a point where a settlement is possible. He said that he felt that they were closer to a settlement than they had been when they first met on the 18th of January. Due to constraints of confidentiality the minister was not able to disclose any details, but he did say that he was hopeful that a settlement could be arrived at prior to the June 6th deadline, the time at which planned suspended legal actions regarding the two countries are to recommence. He also hinted that if a real settlement were possible, he would not be averse to extending the time limit.
Cort also reported said that he had taken the opportunity to meet with various high-ranking officials within the United States departments of Justice, Commerce, Treasury, Homeland Security and within the State Departments as well as the U.S. Trade Representative.
