Big mess to be sorted out by lotto experts
In Canada, in the province of British Columbia, there is a big problem with a lottery, which is affecting a wider circle since Kim Carter, the provincial ombudsman has been criticizing this lottery that is owned by the government of British Columbia. He complained that the British Columbia owned Lottery Corporation has to put into force correct procedures to assure that those who are winning are receiving the right prize monies. The CBC News reports a now development in the story in regard to the Solicitor General, John Les, who said that he has called for an independent audit of the B.C. industry said to be worth two billion dollars. this is in response to Carter’s complaint that the system has exposed itself to fraud.
Les says that he cannot believe that those running the system were not aware that fraud was being committed. The problem involves the discovery that some ticket retailers tend to have a higher number of wins than do others. Carter reported that there were a handful of retail outlets that seemed to be winning much more often then would be expected. In fact she reports that 21 B.C. Lottery Corporation employees or retailers turned up to be multiple winners. For example, she mentions one retailer who in the last five years has won the lottery eleven times winning over $300 000 in prizes.
Ontario’s Toronto University uncovered fraud when it discovered ticket retailers who were winning much more often then would be expected statistically and they complained about this.
Vic Poleschuk and John McLernon are the two executives that head the B.C. Lottery Corporation, Poleschuk is the CEO and McLernon is chairman. They have announced that they will not resign their positions after hearing the ombudsman's report. While they say that they are sorry of the findings, they insist that no evidence exists that would prove that anyone has ever lost their prize due to retailer fraud while they have been in office. They did say that they will work to resolve any possible issues that may have arisen.
