Proposal Put Forth For Investigation Of Online Gambling Attains 42 Sponsors
The Internet Gambling Study Commission Act has been introduced to Congress by Representative Jon Porter of Nevada. The act, if put into effect, would call for the establishment of a commission the function of which would be to study the effects gambling online. Up to the present time, there are 42 United States politicians who have already endorsed Representative Porter's initiative, which proposes that a Congressional investigative committee be established. Instead of once again attempting to get rid of online gambling, this committee would have the job of completely exploring every aspect of online gambling.
Porter is reported as expressing his feelings that the current and ongoing growth in technology creates the need for a much better comprehension of online gambling. According to him, this needs to be accomplished before the Congress can make any informed decisions regarding its future direction. This was said in a prepared statement. He went on to say that through the establishment of an independent and bipartisan study commission, the Congress will be able to assure that it has all of the facts, as it were laid before them on the table before deciding on any additional steps to take.
The proposed legislation would establish an Internet Gambling Study Commission that is completely bipartisan. It would contain nine members who would be appointed to the commission. Once it is established, the commission could then conduct a complete and comprehensive study of Internet gambling. Such a study would include an examination of the existing legal framework that is being employed to govern transactions and activities.
When the Council meets again this next January, it is planning to have assessed a full view by which clearly thought out decisions will be made possible.
The fact that such major Nevada land projects as the American Gaming Association are apparently backing the initiative give the appearance that Representative Porters work is collecting down to earth legal support and business support as well. In fact, it was just recently that the NCLGS, the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States, passed a resolution after holding a hearing on the issue at its summer meeting in Boston, by which they decided to look into its Internet gambling position.
Nevada Representative Jim Gibbons says that it is a fact of life today that gambling has been broadened into reaching new outlets that are quite easily addressed by the use of the Internet. He said this in a prepared statement. So, he believes that it is very important that this expanding trend be dealt with and that the fairness and integrity and fairness of gambling be maintained. In order to carry this out, Gibbons believes that a well thought out examination of the accessibility of Internet gambling is required.
Gibbons proclaims that it is necessary to completely consider any possible negative effects of online gambling before attempting to restrict its use. Any other approach would simply represent an impulsive reaction. He backs Congressman Porter as being a leader in this effort and says that he is sure that the proffered legislation will available a complete online gambling evaluation.
The co-sponsors of this bipartisan legislation are Nevada Reps. Shelley Berkley and Jim Gibbons. This will be the first study of its type ever.
