Jason Mercier wins tourney after qualifying online
Poker player Jason Mercier fought off a stellar international entry field this weekend to win the $1,340,867 first prize in the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour San Remo Championship. Mercier had qualified for the tourney in a PokerStars qualifier satellite.
Mercier, a young American player, dominated much of the play from Day 2 of the event, eventually dispatching his last heads up opponent, Anthony Lelouche, in under three hours.
On his way to winning the title, Mercier faced down an impressive list of respected players, including US countryman Marcus Bower, Dario Minieri and Gregory Genovese of Italy, Eric Koskas and Anthony Lelouche of France, Dag Palovic from Slovakia and William Thorson of Sweden.
Second place finisher Lelouche went home with $779,215.
