Monte Carlo Poker Competition Won By 19-Year-Old Georgia U Student Who Beats Everyone

The European Poker Tour Grand Final in Monaco is yet another major poker tournament that was held over the weekend. This tournament was won by a "young gun" poker player.

A 19-year-old freshman from the University of Georgia, was reported by the Associated Press as being the only remaining American, on the final day of the Poker Stars European Poker Tour's Grand Final, as play began.

After beating off competition from a total of 298 players which included three World Champions, and scores of world-class poker professionals, Jeff Williams, the American political science student, won the big event. The three World Champions included 2001 champion Carlos Mortensen, as well as Team Pokerstars' members Joe Hachem (2005) and Greg Raymer (2004).

After a gripping final table, Jeff Williams won Euro 900,000 or $1,078,000. After he qualified for the event on Pokerstars, Williams paid only $41 to get to the Euro 10,000 buy-in No Limit Texas Hold'em Grand Final. His parents David and Cindi watched his dramatic win. This in fact was a total surprise to their son. The parents traveled across the Atlantic after noting his successful progress on the PokerStars blog.

The biggest ever held in Europe, the five-day Euro 10,000 No Limit Texas Hold'em tournament, generates a prize pool of closed to Euro 3,000,000 or$3,552,000.

With tournaments televised and broadcast throughout the world, the EPT is Europe's richest poker tour. In season 2, events in London, Barcelona, Baden, Copenhagen, Dublin, Deauville and the Monte Carlo Grand Final were featured. Thus there was a total of 2,009 players that generated a Euro 9,824,000 overall prize pool.

On Saturday, March 11, the dramatic final stages of the tournament finished with Jeff in a heads-up showdown against UK sportsman Arshad Hussain. Arshad actually spent nothing to get to Monte Carlo. He won a Frequent Player Point tournament on PokerStars and was able to take home Euro 492 000 by winning in second place.
