Internet Gambling Ad Ban Sought By Canada Provincial Politician
It was reported this week in the Canadian publication Canoe that in the Ontario legislature, a Liberal politician, MPP Jeff Leal, has presented a Bill that wants to place a ban on online gambling advertisements carried out within the province.
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health has put out warning flags directed against Internet gambling, which were spoken of in the debate. Less emphasis however, was placed on the truth that traditional gambling venues within the province are making a considerable contribution to the provincial government’s treasury.
The motives that lie behind this bill are possibly not completely altruistic. According to Minister David Caplan of the Public Infrastructure, the growing competition from online gambling, examples being online poker and various online casinos, is already substantially cutting into Ontario's more traditional (and permitted) gambling outlets market share. He reports the online gambling competition answer online casinos as being a real factor on the Ontario gaming scene.
5.3 percent of Ontario adults have participated in online gambling according to a 2000 poll, cited in the Addiction and Mental Health study.
