Britain Intends to Sponsor and International Summit on Online Gambling
Before the end of this year rolls around, Britain is planning to hold an international summit on online gambling. The purpose of the summit is to establish a set of international standards for online gambling that would both promote the online gambling business and protect consumers at the same time. Britain has taken the lead in this growing industry, as it was one of the first countries in the world to legalize online gambling. "The key reason for the 2005 Gambling Act was to regulate new forms of gambling, providing tougher protections for children and the vulnerable," said Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Tessa Jowell. "But we can only go so far alone. This is a global issue that requires a global solution," she added.
A Culture, Media and Sport spokesman said that organizers of the summit are hoping that it will bring together governments, regulatory agencies and legitimate gambling operators who are intent on ensuring that customers are protected and that the market for reputable services can continue to grow.
The summit would also help devise controls that would help keep organized crime out of the online gambling business, as well as make sure that advertising is decent, honest and truthful. Possible measures for protecting the vulnerable from the consequences of gambling addictions are also to be addressed at the summit.
