$1.3M won by Ontario student while playing online casino poker
WATERLOO, Ont. — More than $1.3-million US has been won by a University of Waterloo student following a week of playing poker at the paradise online betting site. From a pool of more than 700 players and only after a seemingly endless chain of anxious moments, Steve Paul-Ambrose, 22, came out Tuesday, in first place, in the Third Annual PokerStars Caribbean Adventure being played at the Atlantis Casino Resort located on Paradise Island which is in the Bahamas. Paul-Ambrose, who is a third-year science and business student was successful at winning $1,363,100 and at also capturing a seat worth $25,000 seat at the World Poker Tour's championship tournament, to be played in April at Las Vegas. George Ambrose, his brother, spent the entire day receiving updates of the matches online. In a phone interview from his hometown Kingston, Ont., Steve exclaimed that it was a colossal experience. Mr. Ambrose, who is 26, said that he was totally excited and totally blown away. PokerStars, an online poker site organized the tournament. According to company spokesman Scott Womer, the admission was $8,000 and he notes that it is among the biggest tournaments that are available in which people can participate. Paul-Ambrose however, only paid $102. The way the Kingston resident got in to the tournament was through winning a succession of online competitions played on the website. Mr. Ambrose said that it was ridiculous. It was far from anything that he would have expected he is reported as saying. He mentions that he had very little experience. Mr. Ambrose explained that brother Steve had only been playing online for about two years and in addition he reports that his brother rarely has faced opponents while setting at a table. Ambrose explained that just during Christmas, his brother was playing penny-poker along with his uncles. Afterward he told him that he was learning how to get a read on people. He describes how his brother Steve is actually a fairly quiet guy and that he's a really good thinker and good at solving problems. He notes that this in fact is what the game is all about. The tournament used a popular poker version called Texas Hold'em. In this game players receive two cards which they must use along with five additional cards that are dealt on the table, in order to derive the best hand.
